"I have thrived as a dancer at
Summer Stages, being nurtured and challenged by outstanding faculty
who have afforded me unparalleled opportunities, not only within the

The Summer Stages Dance Workshop, which includes advanced-level dance
students and emerging choreographers, lies at the heart of Summer Stages
Dance’s programming. Led by faculty drawn from the world’s
premiere contemporary companies, the program ranks among the most respected
and innovative summer dance programs in the nation.
Held every July, the three-week workshop not only includes rigorous
training in ballet, modern, improvisation, composition and repertory,
but also offers an unprecedented opportunity for seasoned professionals,
advanced level students and new choreographic talent to work together
on the creation and performance of original new works.
Classes and rehearsals are held in Concord Academy’s state-of-the-art,
2,500-square-foot dance studio designed by renowned architect Graham
Gund, as well as in the school’s performing arts center and at
a variety of other locations throughout the campus and the town of Concord.
Housing is available on campus. Students and faculty also have
access to Concord Academy’s meal service and full range of fitness
facilities (including a swimming pool and cardiovascular and strength
training equipment).

2012 Workshop Classes
Daily Schedule
Technique
Ballet (Teri Weksler)
As a blend of ballet techniques, approached
with strong musicality, and an emphasis on correct alignment and movement
dynamics, this class covers the full range of ballet vocabulary, from
the barre to center adagio and grand allegro. Students develop a strong
sense of phrasing and an awareness of ballet as a vital foundation
for all forms of dance.
Ballet (Keith Sabado)
Keith Sabado teaches a ballet class that
develops a neutral technique that is both subtle and expressive. Classes
begin with floor exercises that emphasize breath, stabilization of
neutral spine, neutral alignment and internal support for mobilization.
This component is both awareness building and conditioning and is taught
in a way that encourages self-knowledge. The floor work leads to standing
barre exercises and center floor movement sequences that are dynamic,
rhythmic, musical and flowing. Freedom of movement and sophisticated,
precise and unadulterated technique are the goals of this process.
Contemporary/Modern (David Leventhal. Risa
Steinberg, Dan Wagoner)
With a focus on the development of core strength,
alignment, and artistic expression, material is drawn from a diverse
movement vocabulary to stimulate the dancer’s technique and kinesthetic
imagination.
Repertory
Staging and Phrasing (Seán Curran)
In this class Seán Curran will stage the first 12-minute section
of his dance work Left Exit/10 Beginnings to John Cage's Music
for Piano 2. The participants will learn Curran's phrase work and
be responsible to generate their own. There will be collaboration to
manipulate this movement together. Through work on "Left Exit/10
Beginnings," Workshop participants will be directed by Curran on
all aspects of the performer's art: intention, musicality, phrasing,
technique, play, invention and style. "Left Exit/10 Beginnings" will
be performed at the Workshop's conclusion at the Barbara Lee Theater
at the Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston.
Choreographers’ Project (Lead mentors:
Richard Colton, David Parker)
Each Choreographers’ Project Fellow creates a new work on a company
of dancers selected from the Workshop, culminating in a public performance
as part of the Choreographers’ Project Showcase, which will be
held at The Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston. All workshop
dancers may participate.
Both repertory classes will culminate in a public performance
as part of the Choreographers’ Project Showcase, which will be
held at Barbara Lee Family Foundation Theater at The Institute of Contemporary
Art/Boston on Saturday, July 28, 2012.
Performance Skills
Performance Skills (Andrea E.
Woods)
Students will have the opportunity to explore
movement qualities and time/musicality. Class will emphasize explorations
that deepen and enrich individual performance and develop personal expression
in a class setting. Woods' movement system has strong rhythmic physicality
and organic, subtle movement based on her movement invention which is
informed by her work with Bill T. Jones, and her own SOULOWORKS repertory.
Master Classes (Kyle Abraham, Jack Ferver)
In addition to Summer Stages ongoing technique
classes, these resident artists will offer classes that share their
artistry.
